The Bamaga Tavern is the only licensed premises in the Northern Peninsula Area (NPA) of Cape York that has a general purpose liquor license and is able to offer both in house bar service and takeaways through the bottle shop.
The Bamaga Tavern has a front public bar with pool tables and regularly pool and darts competitions are held. Regina's Lounge and the beer garden in the rear provide a more family orientated environment and food.
Austar is installed which allows big sporting events to be made available to the community, which are not shown on free to air television. The Tavern regularly holds special functions such as discos and kareoke to complement major NPA events such as the Bamaga Show and the annual Ropeyarn Cup Rugby League competition.
The NPA is subject to a State Government instigated Alcohol Management Plan (AMP) which imposes carriage limits on the amount of alcohol that can be carried in a vehicle. These limits are one carton of alcohol and 2 litres of wine. There are severe penalties for being in contravention of these limits.
Tourist operators can apply to Liquor Licensing for a permit to allow their vehicles to exceed these carriage limits.
